More than 100 academic and non-academic staff at the University of Jaffna who had gone overseas on scholarship programmes have not reported for duty after the completion of their programmes.

The university had not taken action to recover bonds valued at more than Rs 166 million from these staff members, the Auditor General has noted. According to the Auditor General’s report in the Jaffna University’s 2023 Annual Report, recently tabled in Parliament, 80 academic staff and 21 non-academic staff members who had gone overseas on scholarship programmes had not reported back to the university after completing these programmes. The Auditor General has also noted that the university had not taken proper action to recover bonds amounting to Rs 166,298,684 from these officers during the period from 1980 to 2023.

Meanwhile, recovered bonds amounting to more than Rs 61.7 million had not been sent to the Treasury, the Auditor General has found.

The report notes that even though examination results should be released within 3 months after conducting the examination as per a circular issued by the University Grants Commission, it had taken a period ranging from 4 months to 27 months in 11 faculties of the university from 2019 to 2023.
